Hush - An Irish Princess' Tale by Donna Jo Napoli

"Mel, hurry up!" Brigid calls, splashing through puddles, heedless of the mud that has come up through the wooden-plank paving of the road.

LC CIP Summary: Fifteen-year-old Melkorka, an Irish princess, is kidnapped by Russian slave traders and not only learns how to survive but to challenge some of the brutality of her captors, who are fascinated by her apparent muteness and the possibility that she is enchanted.

Don't the books need to be published in 2008. Also this title seems a little above the 14-year-old Newbery cutoff.

You are exactly correct! According to the Newbery Terms and Conditions: The Medal shall be awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in English in the United States during the preceding year. This book does not appear to be eligible. Thanks for catching this!

Nonetheless, it was an interesting tale and I'm glad I read it. It was an interesting slant on slavery for YA.
