Mock Newbery Program for KIDS!

Kids who love reading are invited to a special kids’ version of our popular Mock Newbery Election program. The Kids' Mock Newbery program will be held Sunday, January 18th from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Main Library. Advance registration is required, click here to register.
Kids in grades 3 through 6 are encouraged to read the following six books, add comments to our blog as they read, and then join us for a discussion to decide which was the best children’s book of the year. The books we will be discussing are:

· Diamond Willow by Helen Frost
· Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech
· Savvy by Ingrid Law
· The Trouble Begins at 8 – A Life of Mark Twain in the Wild Wild West by Sid Fleischman
· The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
· The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry

We will have refreshments, door prizes, and a lively discussion. Advance Registration is required.

Our gifted teacher is planning on doing this with a small group of students this year also. Our biggest challenge is getting enough copies of each title to have in circulation. With our limited school budget it would be indulgent to get more than a copy or two of some of these titles which are sure to be dust gatherers in upcoming years. We are crossing our fingers that some of them will show up at the bookfair in two weeks. How did you come up with your list? We are considering Savvy, The Willoughby’s, and The Underneath as well. They are all kid friendly titles. I like that you covered the gambit of with non-fiction and poetry.

Good luck with your program, DaNae! It *is* difficult to select which books to use in a program of this type for kids. We tried to select a wide variety of books which were very high quality, that did not have dramatically difficult thematic issues, that weren't too long, and that we thought kids would like. In this selection effort, we were lucky enough to have some kids (and their mom) help out. Let us know which books you selected and how your program goes!
