I was very impressed with the level of descriptive content in this book. Not only was it easy to visualize what was going on, it was common throughout the book to be able to use your other senses to hear and smell the setting through the well-done descriptive passages. The main characters were well-developed; I found myself becoming invested in how Ellie was feeling and coping. While the book takes place during World War II, many parallels with today’s Wars could be discussed, particularly the emotional toll war places on children and families.

I'm not sure if it is quite cricket for the author to weigh in, but I would like to say how thrilled and honored I am to be on your Mock Newbery list. I have been a fan of your Mock Newbery lists for years...if it's on your list I make a point to read it! And now MY book is on the list. This is the best (early) Christmas present ever!

This is a wonderful addition to that era of historical fiction. I was glad to see Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' stages of grief handled as well as the historical aspects.
