I thought the use of good and bad luck superstitions as chapter headings was very clever and the story was well written. Though things in life don't always turn out the way they do in Cynthia Lord's books, I appreciate her optimism -- the spark of hopefulness.
I don't necessarily think it's a Newbery contender, but it is a good read.
