This is such a great book. I usually do not like novels in verse, but this one is impecable. A very strong contender for the Newbery. Ha is 10 during the fall of Saigon. Her mom, brothers, and her escape on a ship and head to Guam. From their they head to America and await a sponsor. Their "cowboy" sponsor claims them, but they are afraid of his wife. Ha does not know English and is teased at school. It is so amazing how much of the Vietnamese culture and way of speaking can be portrayed through so little English words on a page. A must read!
I loved this book. We are discussing at our Mother-Daughter book group on Thursday and I am really looking forward to hearing the others' comments!
Top notch! I think a real Newbery contender. Don't miss it.
