This is the first of four "short lists" we will prepare for this year's Mock
Newbery Program at the Allen County Public Library. Basically, this means that while we will continue to highlight and discuss a wide variety of children's books on our blog -- and we encourage comments on all of them -- the books on this first list are destined to be 'brought to the table' to be discussed in more depth at our Mock
Newbery Discussion and Election on January 9, 2010. We welcome both online discussion through this blog

I have not read many on the list, but the most delightful reading I have done in the last several years was when I recently read Calpurnia Tate....and I have encountered many a young lady who was thoroughly enjoying it while on planes, in waiting rooms or elsewhere that we encountered one another!

I, too, thoroughly enjoyed The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. I have recommended it to other young readers, but everytime we looked for it, it has been checked out. Always a good sign!
I am looking forward to reading more of the titles on this list, but I would like to encourage everyone to read Heart of a Shepherd by Rosanne Parry. The protagonist is a 12 year old boy growing up on a ranch in Oregon who takes on his father's chores during his tour of duty in Iraq. I'm afraid of this book being pigeon-holed as Christian fiction; the religious aspect is only one small part of this coming-of-age story. It is a story about all kinds of heroes, full of humor and heart. My patrons are attracted by the cover; Horn Book gave it a starred review, and it's the best book I've read in years. Can't wait to hear what others think, and I hope to see it on one of the next 3 lists!
I really enjoyed Happenstance Found. Ogg was one of the best "bad guys" I have encountered in a book in quite awhile!
I just finished When You Reach Me this morning. It took me a while to get into it (and the cover didn't help), but by the end I was completely taken in, impressed by the author's ability to interweave time and space in her narration...and I really cared about the characters too. I think this one will be a strong contender.
